THE BC CALENDAR
Which deadlines does a Surrey business’s bookkeeping work to?
A BC business answers to three offices: the CRA for GST and income tax, the province for PST, and WorkSafeBC for workplace insurance. Each wants different figures on a different date.
| Filing | Filed with | Due |
|---|---|---|
| GST return | CRA | One month after each monthly or quarterly period; annual filers three months after year-end |
| PST return | BC Ministry of Finance | On the reporting period the province assigns, monthly or quarterly for most sellers |
| WorkSafeBC payroll report, quarterly | WorkSafeBC | April 20, July 20, October 20 and January 20, then a reconciliation by February 28 |
| WorkSafeBC payroll report, annual | WorkSafeBC | An assigned date in early March (March 3, 5, 7, 9 or 11) |
| T4 slips and summary | CRA | Last day of February |
| T2 corporate return | CRA | Six months after the fiscal year-end |
| T1 with T2125, sole proprietor | CRA | File by June 15, pay by April 30 |
WorkSafeBC reporting is quarterly once premiums are expected to reach $2,000 a year, or for classification units that must report quarterly. The 2026 average base rate is $1.55 per $100 of assessable payroll; your own rate depends on your industry. Your accountant files the returns; ZeraBooks has the numbers ready first.

WORKED EXAMPLE
How are GST and PST kept apart in the books?
Fraser Lane Hardware is a fictional store in Surrey. In September 2026 it sold $30,000 of taxable goods, paid rent and bought supplies for the shop. GST and PST land in different accounts because they go on different returns:
| Line | Before tax | GST 5% | PST 7% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales to customers | 30,000.00 | 1,500.00 collected | 2,100.00 collected |
| Store rent | 4,000.00 | 200.00 credit | None on rent |
| Shop supplies for its own use | 600.00 | 30.00 credit | 42.00 cost of the supplies |
| Owed for September | 1,270.00 to the CRA | 2,100.00 to the province |
GST is 1,500.00 collected less 230.00 of input tax credits. PST paid on supplies the store uses itself is not a credit: the 42.00 is part of the expense. Stock bought to resell is purchased without PST using the store’s PST number, so there is nothing to claim back.
SURREY BUSINESSES
Which Surrey industries do we keep books for?
Surrey has a lot of businesses with trucks on the road, crews on site or a till by the door. Each has a few things the books must get right.
Trucking and logistics
Settlements booked gross, fuel card detail for IFTA, truck loans split into interest and principal. Our guide to bookkeeping for trucking works through a settlement.
Construction and trades
Holdbacks owed to you tracked until released, subcontractors kept separate from payroll, and PST on materials you install. See bookkeeping for contractors.
Restaurants
Daily card and cash deposits matched to sales, tips kept out of revenue, and food, liquor and other sales kept on separate lines for the PST return. See bookkeeping for restaurants.
Retail
GST and PST collected at the till, stock bought PST-exempt for resale, and card processor fees grossed up so sales show in full.
