WHAT ACTUALLY DIFFERS

Four real differences

PAGES OR STATEMENTS

Short statements cost less on ZeraBooks. Long ones cost less on MoneyThumb.

MoneyThumb charges per account on each monthly statement, however many pages it has. ZeraBooks charges per page. On yearly plans, ZeraBooks works out to about 8 cents a page if you use your pages ($948 for 12,000 pages). MoneyThumb’s 800-conversion yearly plan works out to $1 a statement. So a single-account statement under about 12 pages costs less on ZeraBooks, and a longer one costs less on MoneyThumb. Do the sum with your own statements.

QUICKBOOKS AND QUICKEN FILES

MoneyThumb makes .qbo and .qfx files. ZeraBooks doesn’t.

MoneyThumb writes .qbo Web Connect files that QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop import, and .qfx files for Quicken. It also reads OFX, QFX, QIF and CSV files, not just PDFs. ZeraBooks reads PDFs and writes Excel and CSV only. For QuickBooks Online, our QuickBooks-ready CSV goes in through the bank upload. For Quicken or QuickBooks Desktop, MoneyThumb is the better fit.

BALANCE CHECKS

Both check the balances. ZeraBooks shows the gap.

MoneyThumb says its automatic reconciliation compares the transaction totals with the statement’s summary. ZeraBooks checks every account against its opening and closing balances, and on card statements it checks each cardholder’s printed total too. When a statement doesn’t tie to the cent, ZeraBooks reads it again and then shows which account is off and by how much.

How Convert proves a statement

AFTER THE FILE

A general ledger comes with it.

MoneyThumb hands you a file for the software you already use. ZeraBooks does too, and the subscription also includes the ZeraBooks General Ledger. If you’d rather keep the books in ZeraBooks than import a file somewhere else, see AI bookkeeping. Prices for both are on ZeraBooks pricing.

WHO SHOULD PICK WHICH

When MoneyThumb is the better choice

Choose MoneyThumb if you use Quicken or QuickBooks Desktop and need a .qfx or .qbo file. Choose it too if your statements are long, since you pay per statement rather than per page. If you convert five statements a month, its $24.95 plan costs far less than any ZeraBooks plan. And if you also need to turn OFX or QIF files into something else, MoneyThumb handles those and ZeraBooks doesn’t.

Choose ZeraBooks if you want Excel or CSV from a steady volume of ordinary statements, with a plain yes or no on whether each one ties before you download. Need a spreadsheet? Here is how to convert a bank statement to Excel.

QUESTIONS

MoneyThumb alternative: common questions

Ask Damin directly
How much does MoneyThumb cost?

MoneyThumb Online costs $24.95 a month for 5 conversions, $49.95 for 20 or $99.95 for 60. Yearly plans are $199.95 for 60, $399.95 for 240 and $799.95 for 800 conversions. A conversion is one account on one monthly statement. Desktop license prices aren’t on its pricing page. Checked October 2026.

Does MoneyThumb make QBO files?

Yes. MoneyThumb Online for QuickBooks makes .qbo Web Connect files for QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, and its Quicken converters make .qfx files. ZeraBooks doesn’t make .qbo or .qfx files. It makes Excel and CSV, including a QuickBooks-ready CSV for QuickBooks Online’s bank upload. See PDF to QuickBooks.

Is MoneyThumb online or desktop?

Both. MoneyThumb Online runs in a browser on Mac or Windows with nothing to install. MoneyThumb also sells desktop licenses, and its pricing page says the PDF+ desktop editions are Windows only. ZeraBooks is a web app only. You upload PDFs in the browser and download Excel or CSV.

What counts as a conversion in MoneyThumb?

MoneyThumb counts each account on each monthly statement as one conversion, and reconverting the same file doesn’t count again. A 10-page statement with one account is one conversion. ZeraBooks counts pages instead, so that statement uses 10 pages, and a document that couldn’t be read uses none.

Can ZeraBooks make a QFX file for Quicken?

No. ZeraBooks makes Excel and CSV files only, not QFX, QBO, OFX or IIF. If you use Quicken and need a .qfx file, a converter such as MoneyThumb or ProperSoft fits better. If a spreadsheet is enough, ZeraBooks gives you one that’s proven against the statement’s balances.
