GUIDE · DIVORCE FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE
Bank statements for divorce,
in one spreadsheet the other side can check.
To turn years of bank statements into one divorce disclosure spreadsheet, convert each PDF with a bank statement converter such as ZeraBooks Convert, prove each against its printed balances, and download them as one Excel file with the account on every row. Then add columns for each account’s holder and lines needing an explanation. The attorney decides what is filed.

HOW FAR BACK
How many months of bank statements are needed for a divorce?
It depends on the state, the court and what the other side asks for, so the attorney sets the period. The forms themselves often ask for less than people expect. California is a useful example because its Judicial Council forms are public and used statewide.
California’s Schedule of Assets and Debts (form FL-142, revised July 1, 2025) lists savings, checking, credit union and credit card accounts and, for each, asks you to attach a copy of the latest statement. The Income and Expense Declaration (FL-150, revised September 1, 2024) asks for pay stubs for the last two months, income averaged over the last 12 months and average monthly expenses.
Longer periods usually arrive through a request for documents from the other side, or when someone needs to trace money: separate property put into a joint account, spending before separation, or a business run through personal accounts. One to three years of statements per account is a common ask in a contested case. None of this is legal advice; the attorney decides the period and the format.

THE LAYOUT
What columns should a divorce bank statement spreadsheet have?
One row per transaction, every account in one sheet, sorted by date. That shape lets anyone filter by person, account or month without opening a PDF.
| Column | Where it comes from | Why a reviewer wants it |
|---|---|---|
| Date | The statement, in Convert’s download | Builds one timeline across every account |
| Account | Convert adds it when several accounts share one file (All details also has Account Last 4) | Shows which account each line moved through |
| Account holder | You add it: one value per account, such as Joint, Spouse A or Spouse B | Separates joint money from money in one name |
| Description | The statement | Payee, transfer target, check number |
| Amount | The statement; money out as a minus | Lets every filter total itself |
| Category | You add it: wages, household, transfer, cash, personal, unknown | Feeds the monthly expense figures on the financial declaration |
| Flag | You add it during review | The short list of lines someone has to explain |
| Source File | Convert’s All details format | Points back to the PDF that proves the line |
On a card statement with employee or additional cards, the Cardholder column says whose card made each charge. Payments, fees and interest belong to the account and show “Account”.
STEP BY STEP
How do you combine years of statements into one spreadsheet?
For a typical case of a joint checking account, a savings account in each name and one card, over three years.
- 1
Gather every PDF
Download statements from each bank’s statements page rather than the activity CSV, which has no balances to check. Paper statements can be scanned; see scanned bank statement to Excel for what to watch.
- 2
Upload them all at once
Drop the PDFs on Bank & Credit Cards in ZeraBooks Convert. Several files can go up together, each up to 50 MB and 500 pages.
- 3
Read each proof
Every account on every statement must show Proven: opening balance plus its rows equals the printed closing balance to the cent. A statement at Needs a look says which account is off and by how much.
- 4
Check for missing months
Line the statements up by account and date. Each opening balance should equal the previous statement’s closing balance. A gap means a statement was never produced, which is itself something to raise.
- 5
Download them together
Tick the statements, click Download n together, choose All details, One file and Excel. Every row carries its account and source file; see Download your data.
- 6
Add the review columns
Add Account holder, Category and Flag, sort by Date, and filter. Card statements are better downloaded in their own file; see credit card statement to Excel for why charges come out negative.

WORKED EXAMPLE
What does a reviewed divorce spreadsheet look like?
Eight fictional rows from January 2025 across three accounts, after the review columns were added.
| Date | Account | Holder | Description | Amount | Category | Flag |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01/03/2025 | Checking 2210 | Joint | PAYROLL ACME CORP | 4,812.66 | Wages | |
| 01/06/2025 | Checking 2210 | Joint | TRANSFER TO SAV 7781 | -5,000.00 | Transfer | Round sum to an account in one name |
| 01/06/2025 | Savings 7781 | Spouse B | TRANSFER FROM CHK 2210 | 5,000.00 | Transfer | Pairs with the line above |
| 01/10/2025 | Checking 2210 | Joint | ATM WITHDRAWAL | -800.00 | Cash | |
| 01/14/2025 | Checking 2210 | Joint | ATM WITHDRAWAL | -800.00 | Cash | Second 800 in cash in a week |
| 01/22/2025 | Card 4409 | Spouse A | GOLDLINE JEWELERS | -2,350.00 | Personal | Large purchase, new payee |
| 01/27/2025 | Checking 2210 | Joint | ZELLE TO M HART | -1,200.00 | Unknown | New payee; ask who this is |
| 01/31/2025 | Checking 2210 | Joint | MOBILE DEPOSIT | 3,000.00 | Unknown | Not pay; ask for the source |
Filtered to Flag, the month comes down to six lines to explain instead of a stack of PDFs. Filtered to Category, the wages and household rows give the actual monthly figures a financial declaration asks for.
WHAT THE OTHER SIDE LOOKS FOR
What do lawyers and forensic accountants look for in divorce bank statements?
A reviewer on the other side will run the same filters. Finding these lines first means each one arrives with an explanation.
Transfers between the spouses’ accounts
Money moving from a joint account to one in a single name, or between the two people. Match each out to its in; an out with no matching in points to an account nobody has disclosed.
Cash withdrawals
ATM and over-the-counter cash, especially a regular pattern or a rise in the months before separation. Total them by month.
Round-number transfers
Amounts like 5,000.00 or 10,000.00 rarely pay a bill. They tend to move savings, so reviewers trace where each one landed.
New payees
A name that first appears late in the period, a new Zelle or Venmo contact, or a new card. Sort by description, then by date, and the first time each name appears stands out.
Deposits that don’t match pay
Compare deposits with the pay stubs. Anything else, such as a cash deposit, a family loan or side income, needs a source.
Card payments to unknown cards
A payment from checking to a card that isn’t on the list of disclosed accounts means there is another statement to ask for.
Missing statements
A month where the opening balance doesn’t match the previous closing balance. The gap is the question.
WHY THE PROOF MATTERS
How do you show the spreadsheet is complete?
A spreadsheet is only useful in a dispute if nobody can say a line was left out. ZeraBooks Convert checks every account on every statement against the balances the bank printed, and marks a statement Proven only when its rows add up to the closing balance to the cent. Keep the PDFs with the spreadsheet: the Source File column links each row back to the page it came from.
The same idea, done across a whole period with receipts and disbursements, is a proof of cash, which forensic accountants use to show that what went through the bank matches what the records say. Firms that do this work can have the Converter set up for their documents and download layout at no charge; see ZeraBooks for accounting firms.
Can I include credit card and investment statements?
Yes. Card statements are proven against the previous and new balance and split by cardholder. Brokerage and retirement statements go through the investment statement converter, which gives values, holdings and activity on separate tabs.
How many pages will three years of statements use?
About 144 statements for four accounts over three years. At around four pages each that is roughly 576 pages, inside the 1,000 pages a month included for $79 a month billed annually. See ZeraBooks pricing for larger plans.
Does ZeraBooks categorize or flag transactions?
No. Convert reads and proves the statements; the Category and Flag columns are yours to fill, because the judgment about what a line means belongs to the person reviewing the case.
Can I combine statements from different banks?
Yes. Each statement is read on its own, then downloaded together into one sheet with the Account column telling the banks and accounts apart.
Is the spreadsheet accepted by the court?
That is for the attorney and the court’s rules. Most courts want the statements themselves produced; the spreadsheet is the working summary that makes them readable. This page is not legal advice.
Does ZeraBooks connect to the bank to pull statements?
No. There is no bank connection. You upload the PDFs and download Excel or CSV.
