# Download statements from any bank

The steps that work at almost every bank or card issuer, including what to do with a CSV.

## Download a statement

ZeraBooks has no bank feeds, so each month starts with your bank's statement. Almost every bank uses the same path:

1. Sign in to your bank's website on a computer. Some downloads aren't available in mobile apps.
2. Open "Statements" or "Statements & documents". At some banks you open the account first.
3. Choose the account and the month.
4. Download the statement as a PDF.
5. In ZeraBooks, click **Banks & Cards** › **Upload statement**, choose the matching account and upload the file. See [Upload a bank or card statement](https://www.zerabooks.com/help/banks-and-cards/upload-a-statement).

Your bank isn't listed in [Download your bank statements](https://www.zerabooks.com/help/download-statements)? These steps still apply. If you can't find statements, search your bank's help pages for "download statement".

## How far back you can go

Most U.S. banks keep 2 to 7 years of statements online. Card issuers often keep fewer. For older months, ask your bank.

## PDF or CSV

Download the **PDF** statement. ZeraBooks reads the printed opening and closing balances from it and uses them to prove the month is complete. See [How ZeraBooks proves a statement](https://www.zerabooks.com/help/banks-and-cards/how-zerabooks-proves-a-statement).

A CSV works in ZeraBooks too, but it usually has no opening or closing balance. After you upload one, enter both balances exactly as printed on the statement with **Fix statement details…** in Reconciliations. See [Fix a month that doesn't tie](https://www.zerabooks.com/help/reconciliations/fix-a-month-that-doesnt-tie).

Only need the transactions in a spreadsheet? Once you have the PDF, convert it to Excel or CSV with the ZeraBooks [bank statement converter](/bank-statement-converter).

**Important:** Bank statements and card statements go into different account types. Upload a checking or savings statement into a bank account, and a card statement into a credit card account. See [Add bank and credit-card accounts](https://www.zerabooks.com/help/banks-and-cards/add-bank-and-credit-card-accounts).
{% endhint %}

## Frequently Asked Questions

<details>
<summary>Can ZeraBooks connect to my bank directly?</summary>

No. ZeraBooks has no bank feeds and never asks for your bank sign-in. Download each statement and upload it.
</details>

<details>
<summary>Which statements should I download?</summary>

Every month from the date your books start, for every account, oldest first. Each statement's opening balance is checked against the previous month's closing balance. See [Upload a bank or card statement](https://www.zerabooks.com/help/banks-and-cards/upload-a-statement).
</details>

<details>
<summary>My bank only gives me a CSV. Will it work?</summary>

Yes. Upload the CSV, then enter the opening and closing balances from the statement with **Fix statement details…** in Reconciliations so ZeraBooks can prove the month.
